I had been awaiting the sweet relief of death long before I stumbled across the child. After having witnessed the merciless slaughter of my mother, father and younger sister I wandered through the woods, hoping to be found by the terrible hordes that had invaded Astilon. She'd been swaddled in cloth and hidden within the bushes near the smoldering ruins of her caravan. The Coterie's undead abominations had seen to her mother and her aides and were sifting through the wreckage in search of the baby. At the time I was unaware of the child's true nature, nor did I give any though to why I had gathered her and made for the forest.
I had been young, yet stripped of an entire life in just a few brutal, destructive minutes. Everything I had ever know was ripped away by the blades of Coterie hellspawn. In the days that followed my discovery of the babe, something happened. The girl wasn't my family. I only knew her name from the etching on the royal seal that had been bundled into the blankets with her. If I had arrived a minute later she would have been little more than another dead. One more in thousands that had been slaughtered. But to me, even as young as I was, she became something much more. In her I saw hope. Her smile showed me it was okay to continue living.
If I had known how the years would have treated us, I wouldn't have ever told her who she really was. I was stupid to think after she'd been raised on the outskirts of civilization, learning to love the freedom to roam outdoors as she saw fit, she'd ever feel at home among the royal family. I know the king believed he was showing gratitude in knighting me and appointing me as a member of the Astilon Sentinels and, in a way, he was. This was the only way I could continue standing guard over the girl, performing the only duty that had ever given me purpose.
When I learned we were traveling to Goldcrest I could tell she was overjoyed. Goldcrest still isn't like the home we'd created in Astilon before she was taken in by the royals but it'll do. It's certainly better than having entitled nobles turning their noses up at us.
It doesn't matter where we are. As long as I'm by her side everything remains as it should.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- the player --
