He was a bastard. That’s what defined him. At least, in the beginning. The mistake. The result of a night of passion. Something that should’ve never happened. Something that never did happen. According to them. The parents he never knew. He was given away. Left to a servant. They were given instructions. He was to disappear. Be taken far away.
He came into the care of a grizzled old soldier. A man sworn to protect Astilon. Blackwald. He was not gentle. He trained Lionel rather than raised him. Made him a soldier from an early age. His childhood was spent learning swordsmanship and archery. He had no time for games. Yet he was fierce. Only at the age of 6 was he given his name: Lionel. He was as ferocious as the creature itself. A spitfire. Burning hot. Leaving everything blackened in his wake.
Years came. Years went. His training continued. He joined the army. His father thought it would do him good. Calm his raging spirit. It gave him a family. Brothers in arms. Bonds forged by blood and steel. He was happy. For once, content. Until the Coterie attacked. Suddenly they were locked in war. He saw his family die. Only to be raised again. The horrors of those moments stuck with him, but he could not falter. Even as he watched his father die. The only father he knew. Gone.
The war was long. The war was cruel. But finally it ceased. Or appeared to. The Coterie retreated. The army could rest. He could properly mourn. Yet he didn’t stay that way for long. He left the army. Said his farewells. Went to Goldcrest instead. Became a guard. His father had been right after all. The army had cooled his hot head. Soothed his raging spirit. He was calmer now.
