I've been known to be a bit of a low-key guy. I'm not keen on flashy things, I don't preen like a peacock, but I'm attractive enough to get what I want and I'm definitely attractive enough for the likes of my job. All women, and men even, want to feel satisfied. It's a drive within us that seeks out pleasure. Even the quietest people are the loudest in a fit of desire and passion. And in those moments of bliss and during the slumber after, people are also the most oblivious and the most likely to be robbed blind.
I go by Benny, which was my late cousin's name. And sure, with my line of work, perhaps I'm tainting his name and the way people think of him, but Benny is my reason for doing what I am. My real name is Rowan Booker and I was born to a set of parents who hated each other and made short work of their lives together. Dad left and I was stuck with mum. Based on how I turned out, we can all see how well she did when it came to raising me.
I look like her, blonde-ish with dark blue eyes. I'm well-muscled, which I've made it a point to be and sort of tall. I may not look daunting, but anyone who underestimates me is often made out to be a pansy. You're so straight like commutersWith briefcases towing the lineThere's no residue of a torturerInside of your eyes
I think people would take one look at me and expect me to be something boring, they'd expect it based off of my life. The only excitement I've ever faced was watching my mother sleep her way around wherever she went. I think that's where I picked up my skill. We've always lived nearby, always in the same place so my family received a bit of a reputation. Or rather, my mother received a reputation.
My aunt and uncle were one of those couples that everyone wanted to be, a solid family unit with support and encouragement. They loved each other, had two kids who were happy and they did their best to reflect that lifestyle onto me. It didn't work, of course, because my mother's influence was a bit too near and a bit too easy to fall into. My cousin got sick, though and my family started falling apart further.
It was around that time that I began stealing. I was sixteen, a delinquent, who was so affected by familial drama that I guess I never realized that I didn't have to be what I was. Benny always told me that he wanted to be a soldier on the front lines to protect everyone, but with his illness and later his death, he never got to do that. I had done my best to steal whatever I could to help him, to make it easier for him, but it had never been enough. And eventually it just became something of a hobby. Something that I was good at, something I was okay with. She said, "Darlin', you knowHow the wine plays tricks on my tongueBut you don't seem to changeWhen you stuff all of your feelings with drugs"
Even with the turmoil that my life was in secret, and even with the loss of my cousin, I still had someone that I could turn to. There was one and only one person who I felt utterly and completely connected to. Lucy...er Ellis. She was my whole life wrapped up into one person, my best friend, my pseudo sister, the love of my young life and the only love I'd ever known.
We got married once. We were eight, my cousin was still alive and said it was silly. My mother thought it was stupid, but they didn't realize that the promise we made to each other wasn't a matter of romantic love, the importance of our 'marriage' was the promise to stay together no matter what happened in our lives. And we have, practically our whole lives spent together. She's the one who keeps my head leveled and I'm the one who is ready to swing first and ask questions later. I'm certain that if anyone ever messed with her enough, I'd kill them.
Ah well, it's all just part of the life.Other boys you may have datedSerrated your heart with a sliceBut the cut of your love never hurtsBaby, it's a sweet butter knifeI became part of the Guild because I was caught. I was caught by one of the best thieves that were in the Guild and even though I was caught, I was young enough for it to be a rookie mistake. Especially in the eyes of who it was that caught me. If it had been anyone else, I'm certain they would have beat the hell out of me and left me on the side of the road. But she couldn't and even though she's not around anymore, I know that there's a reason she placed me into this guild. Especially with Lucy.
I have reason for what I do, although sometimes I do wonder why I'm still doing it. But then I remember, these people deserve it. All of them deserve it.
