IF I DIE, I'M A LEGEND
I was born for this life.
When I was little, I remember all the stories of her greatest accomplishments. How she swore she broke into government castles and homesteads every fortnight. How she lifted the most beautiful pieces you'd ever seen - jewelry, paintings, dresses - all to test a fine set of skills. The best.
And she would give them away.
She had money. She had everything, because she lived on so little. And there were so many who had nothing, so she gave it all away. Where she could. When she could.
Those stories were fascinating. She was the greatest hero of my life. When anyone heard the name Ellis, they instantly knew. A formidable individual. This world's most perfect thief.
But they never knew she had a daughter. They never knew she made an heir to that legacy.
I don't think she knew, either.GET SOMEONE YOU LOVE
GET SOMEONE YOU NEED
Loving someone is a weakness. That's what they say, anyway. When you put your life on the line, attachments aren't the best idea. They're a bad idea.
When my parents first tried to be together, it was such a strain for her to give into the way he interested her. She had an entire life that felt devoid of any personality. She was her work. And then there was this man who seemed far too sweet and too good for the world they both lived in.
And then she fell for him.FUCK THAT, GET MONEY
Even after she had a child, she never stopped what she was doing. There were months where she had to give up - a child months growing made daring leaps and silent steps improbable - but the second she was able, she was back.
I spent so much of my life with my father. He tried so hard to instill a different kind of life. He would take me with him as he worked in a nearby tavern. Nameless bards filled the halls and I remember - I think - that he used to try to teach me to dance on quiter nights. I thought he was working to pass the time.
But it was training. Nimble feet make for legendary lighter steps. And when you're the family of one of the highest targets in the illustrious guild, there's definitely a price on your head. He was so clever, too. It was all about safety, but it became an elated dream.CHIEF COME TO FIND YOU
YOU DON'T COME FOR ME
My mother is gone, now. She's been gone for a long time. Years. I was enveloped in the guild under her eyes, but it all had reason, I think. I think part of her really hoped I would take over her footsteps instead of following in them. She was always big on explaining her life. They were beautiful stories.
And now, her name is a legacy. Ellis is a title with meaning; it carries a strange kind of hope. It still has power. It still has weight. And when she left it behind, I think she left it with me.
Who better to wear it? To keep it alive? To give it life?
There's no one; you can be damn sure of that.HERE'S THE BOOK
NOW THE SAGA'S BEGUN
The change of pace was a lot to live up to. There was a kind of level of work that needed to be reached in order for the city of Goldcrest to understand that a legacy was back. Perfection. Order. There was so little time to grow, but compacting skill into a small amount of years was paramount. This life became everything. It is everything.
I'm young. People always say that. There's no way I could be someone so great; I'm young. I'm youthful. I seem reckless, and I am, honestly.
I was often enraged by the accusation that I couldn't be great. I am great. Solitary. I used every negative to my advantage to hide the secondary life. After a while, it became primary.
But no, it's not a solitary life. Not completely. It might always be safer - the original Ellis was right about that - but it isn't... Convenient. People long for other people in various ways; it's human nature.YOU AIN'T MARRIED
TO NO AVERAGE BITCH, BOY
Benny. That's definitely his name.
He's like... A partner in crime. Literally. Ever since I've known him - for years - we've always had the same kind of mind. The same beliefs, I suppose, to the way things should be against how they are.
He's got a good right hook, that guy. Look at my funny and if I don't get to you, he'll do it first. Everyone needs someone you can trust. Trust here is... Well, it's forged in an aged fire.
I did marry him once. Out the back of the tavern when I was eight. What do you mean that doesn't count?
We're not in love. It's not a love thing. There are so few ways to properly cement a relationship that's designed to last forever. This world only gives us one choice. He deserves a place in my life forever. He has it.THEY WARNED ME ABOUT YOUR TYPE, GIRL
