MISC: Vespa has a few scars from general living in the wilds, and a nasty burn scar down her right leg from when she accidentally set fire to some brush as a child.
PERSONALITY: Confident, naive and curious, the world both scares and fascinates Vespa. Her time hunting in the wilds has left her relying heavily on her instincts, her senses, and often she'll react on these first. She has little care for social standing, having never learnt to respect someone based on bloodline, which she thinks is a frankly ridiculous concept. She is very over confident, especially when she thinks she can win a fight, and forced into one she'll fight with everything she's got, and isn't past being vicious in order to do so; Life in the wilds was hard, and it has hardened her along with it. She's a deft huntress, and has learned to move with some degree of stealth when she has to. She can often run into situations without thinking, and can come across as very hot headed.
Although curious about most aspects of the world, magic terrifies Vespa. Her Mother installed a fear in her about not only magic but of the Chevaliers; She's deathly afraid of them, and often has nightmares about the unforgiving men her Mother warned her about. Safe to say, she doesn't trust them one inch, nor anyone else who works in the "gilded cage" of the Citadel, be they mage or not. Should she accidentally use magic, it freaks her out, and while she often comes across as confident and steadfast, at the first flicker of fire or other element she can often go into a blind panic.
She's perfectly happy in her own company, and prefers it to having to deal with others and social situations she won't be used to. It takes a while to get her to trust anyone, and once given out this trust is highly valued.
While her trust is rarely given, she's fairly easy to manipulate given the right motivation. Her lack of experience socially means she often misses implications or misunderstands gestures or social actions. That being said, if she feels comfortable, Vespa can be funny, light hearted and a bit of a dork. She's often clumsy in social situations she's rarely dealt with, and often tries to be overly convident in order to hide her unease or her shyness.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- the history --
Vespa was born in the wilds of Terra Nullius, far from Goldcrest, where the region reaches the sea. She was born to Nina Ashborn, whom had sought out not only sanctuary from the raging war but was fleeing from her husband. While Nina was not born of magic, Richard Algrave was not only a mage but a member of the Colterie.
Nina had married the man, whom had been a blacksmith, some years prior to the raise of the group; He was an elemental mage, and had been taught how to wield his abilities in a manner which aided his work, the weapons he forged used by nobles and common men alike.
Richard's family, like him, were made up of a majority of mages. Things were relatively simple, despite the growing concern and rumours circulating about unrest and the potential for war. As nervousness and unease grew, the family were avoided by some and suffered prejudice by others, especially as news of some of the acts of the group making themselves known as the Colterie; Things however didn't come to a head until Richard's younger brother, riled up by a gang at a market, attacked the men in question and set fire to a number of stalls. The resulting Haybrink Market fire killed five people, and a call was made for the brother's arrest. The aggression of the men who came to arrest him panicked Vespa's Uncle, and a fight ensued, leaving the younger brother dead and a few others injured.
Blaming himself for not being present at the arrest and feeling a growing hatred for not only the men who killed his brother but for the way magic and those that used it was being seen by some, Richard was an easy target to be swept up into the Coterie and their views. While at first he kept his alliances from his wife, once the world was plunged into war, it became horribly obvious where Richard's loyalties lay, especially as Nina began to suspect her once loving husband was practising a far darker branch of magic.
When she fell pregnant, Nina didn't feel as though she could bring a child into the world of war and forbidden magic, so she left her husband in the dead of night and along with a small group of women whose husbands had also been turned by the promises of the Coterie, fled to a safer place.
Life in the wilds was simple and basic, but the small clan bound together and did what they could to protect each other and remain as much out of the war's eye as possible. Vespa was born into this very rural and dangerous way of life.
Growing up in a clan where everyone cared for and protected each other meant Vespa grew up feeling loved, but from a young age had to be bought how to defend herself and use simple weaponry. She helped with hunting parties, and proved a decent huntress. As the war raged on, the clan often moved in an effort to keep themselves safe, although they did manage to gather word of what was happening; Frighteningly, Vespa's Father had gained a horrific notoriety for murder and brutal violence... It seems as though the loss of his wife and child had pushed him over the edge, and there was rumours that he'd taken part in the King of Aterion's death.
At about the age of eight it was obvious to Nina that her daughter had inherited her Father's magic, something which terrified her; What if her daughter became like her Father? She barely knew anything about teaching magical restirat, and the last thing she wanted was to venture out of the safety of the clan, so it became a secret. Nina took to teaching her child that magic was this great and terrible power, something that the world feared, and should be kept hidden at all times. The young Vespa, who suffered nightmares of the fearsome creatures known as Chevaliers coming to take her away, fought desperately to do as her Mother asked.
Magic however is not easily controlled when one doesn't know how, and often the young mage would set fire to a tree or manipulating some other element without realising. Fearing for Vespa, her Mother confided in the eldest and wisest of the women, who spoke of a tree known for it's ability to stem magic, although stressed it was only a temporary measure, and that unchecked even the tree would do little to stop Vespa's untrained ability.
A log from the rare tree was found and carved by Nina into a staff, with the wood at it's core and adding metal for decoration and protection; She gave it to her daughter, but before she made her swear to keep it with her at all costs; It quickly became her most prized item.
Whenever Vespa would ask of her Father, Nina would tell her stories of a brave man who went off to fight in the war and died a valient hero, and how proud he would be of his daughter. Vespa grew to idolise this false Father, and when she overheard her Mother talked in hushed whispers to the clan's leader about her fear of Richard returning to claim Vespa, the young mage, feeling hurt and confused that her Mother had seemingly lied about his death, decided to leave the clan and seek out her "hero" Father.
Her search has taken her to Goldcrest, where she hopes she'll discover some information on his wereabouts; With her staff increasingly unable to hide her abilities, it's only a matter of time before her elemental magic is revealed to a guardsman... Or worse, a Chevalier.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- the player --
