"I believe that the world is both just and unjust, entirely depending upon one's point of view. I have faith in the gods above and below, in nature that surrounds us, and yet very little in my fellow man. But that does not mean that I do not hope for a better future. I do. With all my heart. I hope that things get better. I hope that the monsters around me aspire to be something more than they are. That they reach out to one another, find strength in numbers, and find a better way to get through the day than to hurt their neighbors. To not discriminate against those that are different. To show compassion instead of fear and hatred. But that is not the way of the world, and thus we must act appropriately in response.
I was never meant for this life, but I embrace it, even if others do not embrace me in this foreign land. Despite my family's service, my gender will always come first in any conversation. I have made my peace with this, even if others have not. I cannot control what others feel or say about me when my back is turned, all I can do is control my reaction to this information and the way I present myself to the public. Those who the gods have graced with a sound mind and logic will see through such fraudulent accusations and develop opinions of their own based on my actions. That is all that one can truly hope for; to be judged by their actions and not by the whispers in the wind that travel through the darkest of nights.
I persevere. That is all that I can do, and that is all that the gods can ask of a person. I do not blindly follow orders, and for that I am often labeled as a dissenter. There is no such thing as a 'lesser evil.' I refuse to standby while those around me suffer. I refuse to turn a blind eye to the actions of the citizens of Goldcrest, or her elected officials. To believe that one is better due to their birth, claim, or title, is to believe in the falsities that such a civilization has painted as normalities. The only person one can truly be better than is themselves. It is something I strive for daily, and I do not rest until I can look at myself and honestly state that I have done so. As if we do not strive to better ourselves, how can we hope to overcome the adversities that surround us?
This world needs soldiers, not pacifists. It was inaction that brought us to this crippled society so many of us attempt to hold on our shoulders. Military might without actual purpose, arrogance, led to entropy that consumes us all. Many assume that a soldier cannot be a scholar, and contrariwise the same. It is that small mindedness that hinders our growth and expansion. One cannot be both a lady and a knight in shining armor. Both highborn and dutiful. They want to fit everyone in tiny little boxes, designations, without giving the slightest bit of thought to what that does to the world. They preach that the Coterie wish to take away our freedom, yet that is what so many of them do without giving a second though to their words or philosophies.
I refuse to apologize for the person I am. I am not soft-spoken. I am not a follower. I believe in the faith but I refuse to to be a part of religion. I am a warrior when others believe I should be a lady. I refuse to conform for the sake of normality or revered social graces. I am strong. I am brave. I will persist. Not in spite of those around me, but to honor myself and those that came before me. My life is my own, I serve a greater purpose than that of the whims of the rich and powerful. I will live for these ideals and ultimately I will most likely die for them. I have made my peace with this.
