The moment I started existing was the moment I stopped trying to.
I had a busy house. With four older brothers, who had time to care about a fifth? All of them were better than me in some way. More intelligent perhaps, or more handsome or charismatic. There was nothing inherently special about me, and the more I clamored and begged for attention the less I got it. So one day I simply stopped.That is when I found out what I could do.
There's a lot of good that can come with being forgotten. I got to learn things I shouldn't have. People's opinions and family secrets. It wasn't long before I started learning other people's secrets too. I was still considered a "lord" after all, even if only by name. It at least got me into places I otherwise couldn't go if I were just a commoner.
So I had information the right sort of people would be willing to buy. I felt no particular obligation to anyone so I was more than happy to share all the things I learned. The only person who I could even consider calling close to me would be my sister. We both had a bit of bad luck with being important to our own family. The difference was that she could be married off and it would actually mean something. She was also the only one who knew about my hobbies. So as a sign of good faith and peace between us, I helped foil her marriage plans and convince our father into letting her do what she may. It wasn't easy, but well worth it to silence her.
Somewhere in the middle of this, I had made contact with the Thieves Guild of Goldcrest to offer my services. I had heard of them before, and they sounded exactly like my sort of people. It didn't take long for me to become a member and a fence.
