Radford Ambrus
fifty-two | captain of The Bloody Crown | lawful evil | ray stevenson
"We are born into chaos, we embrace the chaos, and someday we shall die in that same chaos. To ignore these truths is to live a life blissfully unaware of the reality of this world, and all the others that have come before and will come after. It is the wise man who chooses not to chain himself to rules that are not of his own creation."
Captain Ambrus is a simple man who enjoys the simple things in life. He loves the spray of the ocean on a cloudy day. He enjoys beverages and herbs that bring him into a state of euphoria. He enjoys collecting art, although most of the items he collects have little-to-no monetary worth. He finds beauty in the abstract world around him. But his favorite things are what follows, in this order: pillaging, arson, kidnapping, and coin. Depending on the day, he does enjoy painting, but these moods are quite rare. He has been at the head of The Bloody Crown for ten years, following a rather brutal mutiny about the ship where, the ship's Captain, First-mate, and Master-at-Arms were killed. He views Brandr as the son he never had, and depending on the young man's mood, never wanted. He sees a great deal of himself in Brandr, which both impresses him and causes him a great deal of worry. He comes off as quite jovial and diplomatic, which at times surprising given the crew's reputation.
He has a twisted code of sorts, always willing to honor his word - or words -- to be exact, when making a deal with Captain Ambrus one most be very careful and explicit in their arrangements, as there have been many who have made arrangements with the captain and have failed to mention that they wished to survive their adventure.
Adalard Vogt

"Color me peculiar, but I do love the way the body convulses when you slit a man's throat."
Adalard is a rare breed of human. Much like Brandr, he tends to enjoy the life the most when in the thick of combat. However, unlike Brandr, he has a flair for torture and experiments. While not a man of great intellect, he is quite clever and mischievous. It is these qualities that Ambrus appreciates most, especially when they need to extract information from otherwise unwilling targets. Like Radford before him, Adalard has grown tired of serving under another. Not necessarily because Ambrus is terrible captain, as he is beloved by his crew for the most part, but simply because Adalard wants more power. He is obsessed with power and reputation, they fuel his every decision. To be able to call himself the captain of The Bloody Crown seems like a grand title. Due to the loyalty of most of the crew, and Brandr's presence, such schemes are on the backburner. But Ambrus can see the glimmer in Adalard's eyes when he takes the helm of the ship. He is not entirely oblivious to the Adalard's plans.
He gets along with Brandr, possibly even in some weird way respects him. That being stated, their relationship is usually one of sarcastic jabs and near fights. Adalard usually instigating fights but backing out to avoid actual combat with Brandr. He enjoys to play mind games, something that Brandr often has little time for and would rather resort to cracking skulls open.

"One often forgets their place in the world when they stray too far from it. That's why I love the stars. You look up and they're always there. Standing firm against whatever may come."
Baldric stands out amongst the crew as possibly the only member who could be considered a decent human being. He has a love for the sea and the sky above, and little else. His position with the crew is a way for him to see the world from a different point of view. Having joined the crew a year prior, following the death of the former navigator, he's still learning the ropes but has an uncanny knack for the position. The oddity to most is that he does most of his charting and navigating at night, waiting until just after sunrise to relay information to the first mate and captain before taking his rest for a couple hours. While he often disagrees with some of the more boisterous members of the crew regarding their actions, he often has to remind himself that it was his choice to serve upon the vessel. Not the other way around. Besides being a navigator, he is also an apothecary of sorts. Often making concoctions that help with increasings ones senses, alleviating pain and fatigue, etc.

"The worst is yet to come. There will be days when the light immolates all that her gaze touches and the darkness of the night engulfs cities whole, bearing his teeth before shedding their blood. My boy, you have not seen the chaos that exists in this world. You've simply felt the tremors she creates while waiting for the correct moment to strike."

Standro is somewhat of simpleton. While not a complete idiot, he's somewhat lacking when it comes to intellect. He makes up for this with his size and an uncanny aptitude when it comes to rigging and weapons. When forced to, he's capable of running the majority of the The Bloody Crown by himself. He's known for his stories, usually delivered drunk, to whomever will listen. Which is usually everybody. While they're mostly untrue they tend to be wildly entertaining. It's hard not to get along with Standro, as he's a pretty pleasant fellow. There is a darkness inside him that comes out when pressed, and he tends to get nervous during storms.
Helena Berg

"Look at me like that again, boy. I will find a great deal of pleasure removing your augen from your schädel."
When they make land in an area without port, or that is unmapped, Helena is often the first one to make beach (often times with Brandr assisting her.) When they are running low on food, the crew relies on her skills as a striker to make sure they will survive. She's strong, she's proud, and she's often ready to violently defend herself or her opinions if pressed to do so. As a native of Ederbrecht, it's not uncommon that when fresh sailors find out her origins they question her true allegiances. Those foolish enough to do so very rarely survive their first night on The Bloody Crown. Some simply go missing, others are very publicly beaten into submission before being forced out on to a dinghy and removed from the crew. Most have enough reverence for her not to push her on such subjects, others have learned that respect the hard way (including Brandr.) She counts herself among one of the most trusted members of the crew, and often times the arbiter in disputes upon the ship.
Not much is known about her life before she came to the ship. She is not proud of her what her country has done, but she will fiercely defend the countries past when pressed to do so. She is a wildly passionate individual who often comes to blows with even those she trusts the most. She does not believe in being submissive or soft spoken, as she views those with these traits as being worthless. She is a warrior. Her people were warriors. That is the way she lives her life and she does so proudly.

Nothing is known about Nazario except for the fact that he creates a sense of anxiety everywhere he goes. Flamboyant and a bit standoffish, he often makes a scene when he enters a room. He enjoys the attention and will often go to whatever lengths to get said attention. Given the right circumstances, and company, he's not above spilling blood to make an entrance. One of the curiosities that Ambrus has picked up overtime, there are plenty of rumors as to what he did before acting as the surgeon upon The Bloody Crown. Some have stated that he stole organs in the night, selling them to the highest bidder as quickly as possible to make a handsome profit. Some believe that he is a demon walking among them. Others believe that he is a member of the Coterie, having gone in hiding since their apparent defeat. What is known is that despite his outright refusal to use it, he does have the gift of magic. A rumored necromancer, he keeps to himself on these subjects.
What he does practice is that of inscriptive magic with the use of written runes, symbols, and words of power. It was for this reason that Brandr was drawn to this eccentric creature. As to his reason for taking an interested in Brandr? Nobody is quite sure, but it's probably not good.

"To give one the gift of death is to show them mercy. There are far worse ways to die in this world than at the end of a blade."
The Bloody Crown is almost always host to several members of Merrill's. When it comes to raids, they often work hand-in-hand, buying out extra men (or women) when needed. A constant presence on the ship, Brynja is a walking force of nature. More than a handful of sailors have tested their mettle against her, believing her gender made her inferior. Their bodies now lay at the bottom of the sea, their names long forgotten. She's intelligent, far more so than many give her credit. Easily one of the most intelligent individuals that Brandr knows, something she never lets him forget when the two crosspaths. They train together, they often travel together on the mainland, and when restless enough, they lie together. More often than not it is Brynja who instigates such instances. She's forceful, confident, and often times cruel to those around her who she feels are beneath her. Which is almost everybody. That being said, there is more to her than she lets on.
Many have suspected her of being high-born, something she has never outright denied. How she came into the line of work, she is never willing to say. Those who have tried to pry into her past don't tend live long enough to see the results of their investigation. Whatever hose she has in the race, is a secret that only she holds. She pushes those around her, sometimes harshly, looking to see the best they can offer.
Degun Maelborn

"There is balance in all things. While our art may not be the most pleasant, it serves a purpose. Often one far too complex for the common mind to understand. "
Like a brother, it was Degun who took him under his wing when he was but a fledgeling mercenary. He helped to shape Brandr into the whirling dervish of violence and steel that he is today. Much like his younger sister, he spends a great deal of time on The Bloody Crown. Often advising Captain Ambrus on tactics, contracts, and other things of a sensitive nature. While Adalard may have the title, most view Degun as the true second on the ship. He does not care for such titles nor does he indulge in giving them any such power. Where many of the men within Merrill's perpetuate the stereotype of them being nothing more than murderous sellswords for hire, Degun believes that, when the correct contracts are taken, they serve a greater purpose. It is something that he has tried and thus far failed to instill into the restless Brandr. Where as many speak of Brandr's combat skills highly, Degun is in a league of his own. It is this for this reason that Brandr constantly tests himself against Degun, hoping to one day surpass him.
He is a complex individual and a man of few words. While he often feels that The Bloody Crown does more harm than good, he does not interfere with their choices as he feel as though it is right to do so. Beings must make their own choices and thus deal with the consequences of said actions. While many have questioned the high born nature of his sister, they tend to remain relatively silent when it comes to Degun. Despite his generally observant demeanor, there is a great deal reverence and fear given to the man.
