Ashley should have seen the ambush coming a mile away but she'd been distracted this night. She was no stranger to some of the more the weird, macabre and violent aspects of the world but she was, at heart, only human. Recent events had been difficult to shake from her mind, which led to a somewhat lackadaisical approach to navigating the city streets. If she were taking a stroll through the Palladium on a bright, summer's day she wouldn't have had anything to worry about. Traversing the Commons in the middle of the night, however, was an entirely different story.
The gang of thuggish bandits caught the Marauder by surprise. They had seen an unimposing young woman of average stature walking through the worst district in Goldcrest alone. That she was obviously not one of the street urchins that infested the Commons only served to draw more attention as those rarely carried much coin or any possessions of note. The distracted and distant way she was seemingly wandering around the streets did nothing to dissuade her attackers that drawing their blades was anything other than a promising course of action.
Ashley, however, had different plans.
The experienced mercenary was no slouch with a blade but she preferred to keep her distance in combat. The bandits weren't expected to be opposed by a trained combatant enabling Ashley to quickly and decisively gain the upper hand. Just as suddenly as the attacked started, it ended. She'd managed to fell two of her three attackers and wound the third enough to send him scurrying away. Ashley scolded herself for allowing herself to fall victim to such a blatant and obvious trap but she'd managed to escape none the worse for wear.
As the adrenaline of the brief but brutal fight waned the searing pain of a deep gash that had been opened up on Ashley's forearm began to grow. She hissed, sucking air in through her teeth as she leaned against the nearest wall. It took a moment for her mind to catch up with what her body was feeling. The pain was coming not just from her arm, but also from her side. She'd seen the blood from her arm splatter onto the dirt ground beneath her but only in the wake of the conflict did she notice the second wound.
Ashley slumped a little, gritting her teeth as the pain fully sunk in. A quick check brought about a little relief. It was only a flesh wound, she'd survived worse. She only had to make her way home to tend to the injuries before she lost too much blood or caught an infection.
In her distraction Ashley hadn't heard the sound of someone approaching until they were far too close for comfort. Her wounds seemingly forgotten she wheeled around, bringing her bow up and training it on the source of the noise. She swallowed hard, eyes wide, body tense as she readied for another round of fighting. "Who's there?" She demanded, peering down the dim, moonlit alley. "If you're looking for an easy target I have bad news for you."
